Jesus offers to replace our fears with a peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). He alone is the peace to our troubled hearts. Jesus lived and died to make His gift of peace possible. The peace gained from the cross is much more profound than anything this earthly sojourn offers. Jesus came to bring the peace of forgiveness. The rebellion of self-centeredness and pride, which robs people of peace of mind and soul, has been confronted on the cross. When we come to understand this fact, the fears which grip our hearts will be healed. The memories of past failures and the uncertainty of the future will be exorcised. What then should be the dominant attitude of our feelings—peace or fear? We must allow the peace of Christ, through forgiveness and love, invade us to the point that the great fears of our lives can be faced and healed. What makes us afraid? Christ stands amongst us, right now, willing to take care of those fears and burdens. Can we believe this? Can we hear Jesus speaking His words to us—"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." – John 14:27
