Envy is the result of an unstable state of grace. It hits us when we are out of the flow of God’s guidance. Comparison of ourselves with others takes our eyes off God. The focus on God we require is then misspent and misused in adoration of another person’s gifts and possessions. Thus, the capacity for praise is misdirected and used to want to be or have what is someone else’s. The antidote for such displaced emotion is focusing on God’s goodness and then on ourselves as blessed and loved by the One and Only Creator of the universe. The more we praise God, the easier it is to affirm another’s specialness. “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” –Psalm 37:4
