Resisting the enemy implies spiritual combat, and indeed it is. The most potent means of resisting the devil, as James 4:7-10 says, is to “submit to God.” Why? Because it is God alone who has defeated Satan at the cross, and as believers, we share in Jesus’ triumph. The devil’s main purpose is to subvert God’s power and appropriate it for himself. But remember all authority belongs rightly to the Lord, so when we fail to obey Him, we unwittingly advance the adversary’s goals. Anything we do apart from God’s will serves the enemy. We have to submit to one or the other. That is why it is so incredibly important to obey God, knowing that “greater is He who is in us than the enemy” (1 John 4:4). Our God deserves our devotion, and if we want victory and freedom, we must depend on Him. However Satan is tempting us, let us submit to God by relying on His mighty Spirit and Word. We shall find astonishing victory and power over our most difficult situations and stubborn sins! — James 4:7
